Lambertville’s Golden Nugget
The Golden Nugget Flea Market, located on Route 29 just outside of downtown Lambertville is one of New Jerseys oldest. Since opening in 1967, it has solidified its spot as a Delaware River Towns institution. The flea market was named the Golden Nugget to honor James W. Marshall, the Lambertville resident that first found the gold in California that began the 1849 Gold Rush.
It is a great place to spend the day casually with friends or family or to hunt down the next trinket or treasure for your collection. This article will serve as a guide as to what you expect from a visit and some tips I’ve picked up over years of visits.
The Golden Nugget Vendors
The market features two hundred outside dealers. There are rows and rows of vendors displaying extraordinarily diverse offerings.
Like all flea markets, there is a mix of vendors. Some with eclectic odds and ends proudly displayed and others that have more narrowed down selections that live within one genre such as rocks and minerals, records, or antique tools. In my opinion, there is something for everyone.
Indoor Shops
The Golden Nugget boasts thirty indoor shops housed in a North and South building. The indoor shops typically offer wares that appeal to one type of collector or interest. For example, the South Building is home to shops such as antique dealers, military artifacts, kitchen antiques, and autograph collections.
Weather
The weather will play a big part in any visit. For instance, on a beautiful day with perfect blue sky, the crowds will roll in early, and almost all vendor stalls will be occupied. However, the large group of buyers will allow vendors to sell faster thus sending them packing up early.
Conversely, an overcast day with a chance of rain will draw fewer vendors but will be way less competitive in terms of parking and the ability to show up later while sellers have a more extensive selection of inventory.
Every trip is different.
Food
There are two food vendors in the market.
The Sweet & Savory Café is centrally located and offers a wide variety of foods including breakfast sandwiches, hamburgers, and hot dogs.
Uncle Googleberry’s BBQ boasts the best BBQ in town. They offer smoked favorites in sandwich, sampler, and platter form. They are relatively easy to find. Just follow the delicious smoky smell and look for the rising smoke from their smoker.
The Golden Nugget Flea Market is a must visit for any local or visitor who enjoys nostalgia, adventure, antiquing, or is looking for a unique experience. The market is open Wednesday, Saturday, and Sunday throughout the year.
