Are you looking for opportunities for holiday donations? There is always an abundance of kindness and generosity flowing through the Delaware River Towns. As the holidays near, that sense of charity tends to grow.
Part of being a good member of any community is lending a helping hand to neighbors in need. If you are compelled to donate some time this holiday season here are some ways you can help.
Helping Feed the Hungry
According to Feeding America 40 million Americans suffer from daily hunger. Stepping up and cooking or serving the hungry is a noble way to dedicate time. Here are some local resources that may need some help this holiday season.
• Fisherman’s Mark – Lambertville, NJ
• Food Pantry at Frenchtown Presbyterian Church – Frenchtown, NJ
• Lambertville Food Pantry – Lambertville, NJ
Visit A Nursing Home
The holidays can be very lonely for the elderly. Volunteers at nursing home often provide unique opportunities for the residents to partake in outings and special activities. Just a visit to chat with lonely nursing home occupants can have profound effects on the mental health and general well being.
Four Legged Friends
Gandhi once said “The greatness of a nation can be judged by the way its animals are treated”. If you have the time and adore animals shelters are always looking for volunteers. Walking, cleaning up, and fostering a four legged friend can do a wonder for your soul.
True story…last week my wife and I offered to foster a dog named Dusty from the Animal Alliance in Lambertville.
This week we adopted this loveable goof. Meet Dusty.
• Lulu’s Rescue– Point Pleasant, PA
• Animal Alliance– Lambertville, NJ
Be The Change
Sometimes giving can be a spontaneous act. Paying it forward is a great example. Extend an invitation to a friend who cannot spend time with their family to celebrate with yours. Champion a cause on social media.
The important part is that we all make a conscientious effort to shape the world around us for the better. Every effort of kindness reinforces how fortunate we are to be a part of this community.
Throughout the Holiday Season many are compelled to volunteer. The act of helping is certainly important as the Winter moves in but these organizations are often understaffed the rest of the year. If you are able, make a commitment to help these organizations monthly or even weekly. Together, we can make this community even better.
